This Lobster Roll Kit Costs $1,000 (With Some Assembly Required)
Lobster rolls were already one of the most expensive quick-service meals you can grab, and in 2021, prices really surged through the roof with some joints charging over $30 for what is essentially chunks of lobster on bread.
Residing in America's lobster heartland, the Portland-based Get Maine Lobster understands as well as anyone that the crustacean's meat ain't cheap. So as the price of everything has exploded this year, the online lobster retailer has decided to simply lean into decadence for the holiday season and offer what they're billing as the world's most expensive lobster roll.
Beginning on Thanksgiving Day, Get Maine Lobster will start accepting reservations for its $1,000 Montecito Lobster Roll Kit for Four. Quick math: That's $250 per lobster roll. (With all the extravagantly-priced stunt menu items we've seen over the years, we can't confirm that that's the most expensive lobster roll ever served — but, no, it's not cheap!)
Each kit will come loaded with four brioche rolls made with Normandy butter and two pounds of pre-cooked Maine lobster claw meat, as well as plenty of luxurious toppings: A5 Wagyu beef, Royal Belgian Osetra Caviar, white truffle aioli, and 25 milligrams of edible gold flakes. The extravagant-looking box also comes with a few inedible goodies: namely, a pearl caviar spoon, a silver oyster shucker, and a Turkish Get Maine Lobster-branded cotton hand towel.
But why name a Maine lobster kit after a community on America's opposite coast? "I've been wanting to design an over-the-top lobster roll for some time," Mark Murrell — who is not only founder and CEO of Get Maine Lobster, but also the brand's chief curator — told me via email. "During a recent visit to Montecito in California, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and the recipe just flowed. Montecito is a magical place and I wanted to design something that would feel at home and elegant."
Get Maine Lobster states that the result brings "the finest of the East and West coasts together for an unrivaled culinary experience."
If you want to be tipped off the moment reservations open up, the company says you can sign up for the waitlist on their website. Though they didn't explicitly state how many kits would be sold, they did say only a limited number will be available.
